Wrestling was the first competitive sport, dating back to 3000 BC. Wrestling was introduced into the Greek's ancient Olympics in 708 BC. Greco-Roman Wrestling was created in France by Jean Exbrayat in 1848. It was "renamed" Greco-Roman Wrestling (from wrestling) by the Italian wrestler Basilio Bartoletti to underline ancient wrestling. The sport's popularity spread quickly across Europe and to America after the civil war.
